Description

Here's my entry for the 2010 edition of the Werewolf Calendar. I completed this in June; sorry I have not been around to post. The color original (LE Jumbo print 1 of 1) and pencil original have been sold.

About this Piece: I decided to go with the "opposite" of last year's image, which was of a white werewolf with Celtic-themed adornments. I used warm colors instead of cool, had the werewolf facing left with its back to the viewer, and drew darker fur, as the pelt is based on a Mexican wolf. Instead of Celtic style decorations, I used imagery that was Mayan in inspiration, though of course I adapted things in my own way; you'd not see glyphs arranged quite like that in actual Mayan art, for example.

As usual for me, I changed and stylized things in my own way; since this was to be a fantasy image, I was not trying to be completely accurate. I thoroughly enjoyed researching this piece, as I am fascinated by ancient Mesoamerican culture and sculpture. As for the ornamentation, many Mesoamerican sculptures and carvings featured animals and shamanic or religious images of half-human and half-animal figures wearing ornamentation and jewelry, so I thought it would be fitting to design some of my own for this shapeshifter.

As for anatomy, though the subject can stand upright, I arranged the shoulders and back in a manner that would be conducive to quadrupedal locomotion as well, and drew paws that were dextrous enough to handle objects, yet were still sturdy enough to support the body while walking on all fours. I enjoy seeing werewolves of all body styles, but I do have fun drawing werewolves that have hands or paws that would work for quadrupedal motion; long fingers aren't as conducive to fast quadrupedal motion over long distances (though of course there are exceptions).

Most of the work was done by hand, in pencil on Strathmore bristol. I laid out the background in Adobe Illustrator CS3, then re-drew it by hand on the final board to make it more rough and textured. Color was added in Photoshop CS3, and yes, I am still using a mouse - haven't gotten around to getting a tablet yet. Soon!

Please note: I understand werewolf appearance, lore and legend is very special to many people; it is to me as well. Shapeshifters have fascinated me ever since I was little, and I love snarly and fangy werewolves, as well as ones from stories of old. Many of the werewolves I draw for myself look much more lupine overall, or on the other hand, look quite unlike wolves (I need to post some of them). However, for this piece I decided to relax and take a fun spin on things, and had a great time working on it; it is meant to suit the fun theme of the calendar, and to be consistent with the other pieces featured, and it's not meant to compete or clash with anyone else's ideas about werewolves. There are so many different wonderful interpretations out there!

My ex had this as her Steam and Discord profile pic.  That was 3 years ago, just before she left me.  To this day, I become an uncontrollably sobbing mess every time I see your works; they remind me of her.
